Why Fluoride Treatment Should Be a Regular Part of Your Oral Health Care

Fluoride treatments to re-mineralize teeth benefit both children and adults.

Families readily agree to fluoride treatment for their children to reduce the risk of dental caries (tooth decay). But adults are often surprised to learn fluoride treatment will benefit them as well.

Our clinicians are experts at assessing the health of your tooth enamel. If they suggest fluoride treatment, it is because you will benefit from it. Treatment restores minerals to enamel, reducing tooth sensitivity and reducing the risk of dental caries. If your teeth have become sensitive over the years, it’s likely you will greatly benefit.

Fluoride treatment is very affordable and safe. After your teeth are cleaned, the hygienist will swab fluoride on each tooth. It will quickly dry on, and your teeth may feel a bit sticky until you brush your teeth four to twelve hours later. You will need to refrain from eating and drinking for 30 minutes.

To restore enamel and to maintain enamel, our Smile Design dentists and hygienists recommend adults have a simple clinical application of stannous fluoride up to four times a year when they come in to have their teeth cleaned. Don’t be surprised when your Smile Design hygienist asks if you would like fluoride treatment. They will be happy to answer your questions and explain the benefits this treatment will provide you.

Regular dental examinations and cleanings also are important for keeping teeth healthy, so maintain a regular schedule of appointments at six-month intervals, unless more frequent visits are recommended by your Smile Design dentist. Keep in mind that fluoride treatment is just one of the proactive measures you can take to prevent dental disease. Brushing twice a day and cleaning between teeth with floss, a water flosser, or another type of interdental cleaner is necessary to remove plaque between cleaning appointments.
